Winter Solstice and Holiday Cheer

Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

Happy Winter Solstice

It has been a long year for most of us, filled with uncertainty and complications. Tempers are short. Anxiety is high. And winter is coming.

I love the Winter Solstice. There is something magical about the fact that the coldest season coincides with the sun returning. As if nature decided that she was going to throw the hardship of snow and ice at us, but with a little reminder that all things are cyclical and spring will return.

One of the things I love about nature and geology are the reminders that the universe is vast and time is relative. One year in the life of a bristlecone pine means little, while a mayfly is already gone. Rocks show us the incredibly slow changes that occur on the very earth we live on, yet sudden upheavals appear as well, as entire mountains can grow overnight with the right conditions.

Winter Solstice reminds us that our experiences can unfold over a lifetime or occur on a single night

All of this is to say that while a year is a long time, it’s also the blink of an eye. Even though things are challenging, we continue to be in this together.

So here’s my wish for all of you, on this long dark night. I wish you health, I wish you contentment with what you have, I wish you joy in the coming winter.

Happy Winter Solstice and Good Cheer for the Holidays

And for my friends in the Southern Hemisphere. Enjoy your season in the sun.
