Murder, She Wrote — Debonair in Death

Murder She Wrote

When a local art shop owner is murdered, Jessica Fletcher is surprised to once again be working alongside her old friend MI-6 agent Michael Haggerty to solve the case in the newest mystery in this USA Today bestselling series.

When Nelson Penzell, co-owner of a local art and treasure store in Cabot Cove, is murdered, the nail tech from Jessica Fletcher’s favorite beauty parlor is the main suspect. After all, she’s the one who ran out of the store screaming, covered in blood, and holding the murder weapon.

Jessica is positive that despite the circumstances, Coreen can’t possibly be guilty, and is determined to prove it.

When Michael Haggerty, handsome MI-6 agent and Jessica’s old friend, is caught snooping around the victim’s home, it’s quickly apparent to her that she was right.

Nelson has always had a bit of a reputation for being a rake, but Haggerty is sure his sins go far beyond what anyone in town imagined. If she wants to clear Coreen’s name, Jessica will have to work alongside Michael to find out who killed Nelson—and maybe help bust a crime ring in the process.

Murder She Wrote —The Interview with Jessica Fletcher

Hi Jessica, thank you so much for joining us today. I’ve been a fan of yours for several years. Great to see you again, and back working with Terrie Farley Moran on another project. How was your experience working with Terrie on Debonair in Death?

Thank you so much for inviting me here today. When we met I was delighted to learn that Terrie was an original Murder, She Wrote fan and had begun watching the television series from the very first episode in 1984. She also has read most of the books, many of them more than once, so I was sure we’d get along. Of course there were times that I had to correct her idea of something I would say or do, but overall we had a grand time developing plotlines and new characters while remaining true to many of my old friends.

The victim in Debonair in Death is Nelson Penzell, co-owner of a local art and treasure store. Just between us, did he have it coming?

From what I knew of him, Nelson Penzell was not a nice person, however, to my mind, no one deserves to be murdered.

You team up with Michael Haggerty to solve the murder. What was it like be back with your old friend?

When you say that I teamed up with Michael, I find that an interesting choice of phrase. The way Michael pops in and out of my life, always stirring up chaos, I find it difficult to think of him as a team player. Still, when he showed up in Cabot Cove shortly after the murder of Nelson Penzell, I have to admit it was wonderful to see him again, although he naturally brought many of his irritating habits with him.

Coreen—prime suspect in the murder—works for your favorite beauty parlor back in Cabot Cove. Why are you so certain she’s not the killer? And what’s your favorite beauty routine?

I have known Coreen since she was a teenager and began working part-time in Loretta’s Beauty Parlor. She is a kind, helpful, caring young woman who couldn’t squash a bug, much less kill a person. I never doubted her innocence.

As to my favorite beauty routine, I am a firm believer that exercise keeps both the mind and body in tip top shape. Of course at my age, I moisturize each evening.

How is everything in Cabot Cove?

I am so blessed to live in Cabot Cove. I have wonderful neighbors and so many dear friends. Along with Seth Hazlitt I am working on a committee to raise funds to upgrade the children’s wing of the community hospital. There are always worthwhile charity projects to support and I am extremely proud of how eager my neighbors are to pitch in.

What are you and your author working on now?

Terrie and I turned in the manuscript of book #55 Murder, She Wrote Killer on the Court and we are waiting to hear what our editor thinks. The court in the title is a tennis court in a beach community in New York City. I love the story because I get to spend time with my nephew Grady, his wife Donna and their son Frank, who is named for my late husband.

We have also begun to write book #56 and I am delighted that I will get to visit Belfast, Giants Causeway, Ballycastle and other fabulous places in Northern Ireland.

Jessica, you have written several novels, worked with a number of writers and been involved in several novels and television episodes. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

My advice for writers is always the same: keep writing. Sometimes it takes a thousand words to find the perfect one hundred words that say exactly what you mean. Writing is a job, a difficult job that requires courage, persistence and determination.

Gracie!

I love animals but I don’t keep pets because I travel so much of the time.

Terrie has allergies but has learned to work around them with meds so she can hang out with one or another of her grand pups.

Here is a picture of Gracie who just celebrated her ninth birthday!
