Draw and Order

Appalachian artist and local guide Miranda Trent opens a new murder investigation after her Paint & Shine tour group discovers the remains of a missing hiker along an ancient trail . . .

For her latest excursion, Miranda is thrilled to take a close-knit group of rock climbers, the Risky Business Adventurers, up the challenging Battleship Rock Trail to paint and sample moonshine. But the outing is cut short when they discover a skeleton near the trailhead. Even more startling, the bones belong to Howard Cable, Miranda’s cousin…and a former classmate of the Risky Business group.

The sheriff chalks it up to a hiking accident, but Miranda isn’t convinced that Howard, an experienced woodsman, died within sight of a well-marked trail. So, with the help of Ranger Austin Morgan, Miranda sets out on her own investigation and discovers that the Risky Business group is keeping plenty of secrets. But is one of them hiding the truth about Howard’s death?

Character Interview: Draw and Order

So thrilled to get to chat with Miranda Trent, star of the Paint & Shine Mystery Series!

Hi Miranda, it’s great to have you join us today. It looks like your author has painted you into a corner—forcing you to investigate another murder. But before we get into your current situation, let’s talk a little bit about your background. Tell us about your Paint & Shine Tour Group.

With pleasure! I started this business because I love to show off the beautiful sandstone arches within the Daniel Boone National Forest. I take tourists up on the mountain trails to paint a spectacular vista, and then we go down to my family farmhouse for a traditional southern meal paired with home-brewed moonshine. That’s why it’s called Paint & Shine.

How did you happen to stumble over your first murder in Still Knife Painting?

On my first tour, we were getting ready to eat, and I went into the kitchen to find the best biscuit maker in the county stabbed with her kitchen knife.

What launches the events in your latest investigation, Draw and Order?

I’ve taken a group of adventurers up a well-known feature call the Indian Staircase for a charcoal drawing session. But before we leave, a client finds skeletal remains. Sadly, it turns out to be Howard Cable, my cousin who has been missing for five years.

What should readers know about your little piece of Appalachia?

Eastern Kentucky is an area of outstanding natural beauty populated with warm-hearted friends and relations that I have known all my life.

Although I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, all my summers were spent in Wolfe County on my family’s farmhouse. It was an idyllic way to learn about nature and life.

Who is Ranger Austin Morgan and what role does he play in your latest caper?

Austin is my partner in crime for solving murders. Since we were children, we’ve known each other, so it’s entirely natural for me to count on his resources and talents to answer my questions about the discovery of my cousin’s remains.

Tell us about Howard Cable:

Howard is my cousin on my mother’s side of the family. He was about five years older, so we didn’t spend much time together. I remember him as a devoted son and ambitious go-getter.

What’s something about you that might surprise your fans?

I’m not particularly eager to take time to eat. I know, I know, I have a food-based business. But in reality, I am an energizer-bunny, and sometimes, there’s just too much going on to take a break. My mom is relentless about reminding me to slow down. I know she’s right, but there’s just one more thing I need to do before lunch, then – POOF! The afternoon is gone.

What is your author up to next?

Cheryl Hollon is hard at work drafting Reflection of Malice (Webb’s Glass Shop #7) and has ideas for Miranda Trent’s next adventure.

Wonderful to chat with you today, Miranda. I hope you’ll visit us again soon!
